This patch allows users of Epson Stylus Color printers with Macintosh driver StylusCOLOR 1.20A to print in true 720 dpi resolution. As supplied by Epson, the StylusCOLOR 1.20A driver does not print in true 720 dpi. Instead, "720 dpi" mode prints from only a 360 dpi pixmap. Printouts in "720 dpi" mode have bolder colors but are not higher resolution than 360 dpi mode. Jaggies in text and line art remain at 360 dpi. Hence, text and line art are not as sharp as they could be.
This patcher does two things…
• Changes the driver to use true 720 dpi to fix jaggies and fine detail dropouts.
• Makes 720 dpi printing easier by changing default print options to letter size paper, CMYK (color) printing, 720 dpi mode, 720 dpi coated paper, screen pattern off, microweave on, and darkness midpoint. (Previously saved documents will remember their former settings.)
This patcher works only with version 1.20A of the Epson StylusColor driver. If you do not already have the 1.20A driver, it may be obtained on Compuserve in the Epson forum or directly from the Epson support BBS at (310) 782-4531.
The original hack for this patch was by Chris Pratley (75454.2353@compuserve.com) and a friend. Chris forwarded the information to me and I created this patcher. You may recognize Chris as the maintainer of the Epson Color Stylus FAQ. Essentially, the 720 dpi hack is to alter PREC 30 from 0000 to 0001. This patcher was created to allow users to perform the change without ResEdit and to change the printer default settings.
Distribution by online services, user groups and bulletin boards is allowed and encouraged, but this patch and read me document must be distributed together and unaltered.

Instructions
1) Disable any virus protection software you have. This patch will not work properly if anti-viral software is active.
2) Patch only a freshly installed copy of StylusCOLOR 1.20A. A new printer driver named StylusColor 720 DPI will be created.
3) Quit this patch utility.
4) Place the newly created StylusCOLOR 720 DPI into your extensions folder inside your system folder.
5) Use Chooser to select StylusCOLOR 720 DPI as your printer. You can switch between drivers using Chooser.
6) Try printing at 720 dpi with each driver. Look closely at very fine sloped lines or italics to see how jaggies are now greatly reduced. If an error message appears stating that insufficient memory is available for printing, increase your application's memory allocation by 500K to 1000K.
